I was interested to learn about the Hudson’s Bay company and its place in economic history. It turns out, this is a relatively simple story. The British government granted the company a monopoly on trade over the vast Hudson’s Bay watershed. The company developed a series of outposts where it traded with a network of natives. It traded industrial goods (guns, iron tools, pots and, eventually, liquor) for animal pelts (mostly beaver for hats). The company’s fortunes rose and fell with the geopolitical environment (whether England was engaged in another war, the strength of the United States). The company paid dividends to a few hundred private shareholders, when times were good, and otherwise operated as a private business. Most of the book is a recounting of the travels of various frontiersmen across Canada, which was less interesting to me. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021 )

I can't help but give the book five stars even though I found parts of it near the end laborious. I have to admit to becoming tired and wanting the book to end so I could get on to something else. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sheesh -- Great read, important new historical distinctions : This book well worth reading for anyone interested in a realistic accounting of the European settler interaction with indigenous residents during a couple centuries of canoe travel across northern North America. The book presents the perspective of mainly Scottish Hudson's Bay Co. personnel, but provides details on indigenous folks who led them on their explorations. The indigenous perspective (and that of the more numerous French voyageur rank and file) is still something of a mystery but this eminently readable book gets us partway there. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Fascinating account of the origins of our national identity. : I really enjoyed this book. Truly interesting accounts of some incredible characters in Canadian History. This is not a book for those who wish to believe that Canada has always been a peaceful country. Though I've never believed the current narrative that it was all peace and harmony before the "colonialists" arrived I never knew to what extent many of the First Nations battled each other. Indeed, what we call the Inuit today, were constantly at war with the Chipewyan. They, in turn, heavily outnumbered were taken captive so often as slaves by the Norther Cree that one particular group became known as "the slaves". Not a pretty history. Despite that, there was clearly a lot of respect from the early traders with their indigenous trade partners. Things appeared to have gone downhill when the conflict between England and France started to influence the fur trade in negative ways. The early history of the HBC is the early history of our country. Everyone should educate themselves about this chapter in our history. ( Reviewed in Canada on July 2, 2021 )

You can get yourself lost in time reading Stephen's words of the fascinating world of early Canada and all it's inhabitants.
